Roles and permissions

A role is a bundle of permissions. Give people the smallest role that lets them do their job.

Steps

  1. Open it

    User Management → Roles.

  2. Start from a built-in role

Cashier, manager and similar roles are already defined. Copy one and adjust rather than starting from nothing.

  3. Tick permissions

They are grouped by module and by action — view, create, edit, delete. A cashier usually needs to create a sale but not delete one.

  4. Decide how much data they see

There is a separate permission for viewing everyone's records rather than only their own. Withhold it and a cashier sees only the sales they rang up.

  5. Save and re-sign-in

Permissions are carried in the session, so a change reaches someone the next time they sign in.

Good to know

  • Do not hand out the owner role to solve a permission problem. Find the one permission that is missing.
